At the time, both women were small business owners and mothers of toddlers, and each operated a women's clothing boutique. Scarlett's shop was known for vibrant colors and southwestern styles, while Chelsea's store centered on trendy comfort items with a beachy, bohemian flare. Their businesses occupied spaces within Proper Shops, a pop up style retail space in Downtown Tucson, where they began cross marketing and styling shoppers between the two stores.
Working alongside one another gave Scarlett and Chelsea a way to share the practical challenges of running independent businesses. They understood the difficulty of competing with larger chain stores and online retailers, while also wanting to provide for their families and remain faithful to their creative visions. Their time at Proper Shops helped them build a foundation of empathy, understanding, and shared purpose. As their friendship grew, they recognized that they were serving a similar customer base and managing many of the same responsibilities on their own. Combining their strengths and resources became a natural next step.
